Description

Digital Painting of Pedro, an Ocelot at the Buffalo Zoo
Painted from scratch in Photoshop CS4, over about 60 layers, using one of my own photos as reference.
Probably about 25 hours of work, give or take.

Please note that if you :+fav: but don't comment, I probably won't get a chance to say thank you... so thanks in advance!

After a great deal of work, and a great deal more time, it's finally finished! :excited:
Probably my favourite painting I've EVER DONE!!! Couldn't be happier with it!
This painting is based on a photo I took at the Buffalo Zoo (the first, and ONLY time I've ever seen their Ocelot... he's a shy fellow). Sadly, my favourite photo of the bunch was out of focus (I blame the poor lighting, quick moving creature, and my own excitement). In order to make use of an otherwise unusable photo, I referenced the pose... thought the expression was fantastic :D

This project reminded me of everything I like about painting! Things clicked along so naturally, I just shut off my brain and cranked up some music... so much fun! I'm rather sad now that it is finished, and can only hope that my next project will be half as entertaining and successful.

Sorry 'bout the many watermarks, but as I said, my favourite painting to date, and couldn't bear for it to be stolen... watermarks not going anywhere, so don’t ask.
Only part of the painting that wasn't done using a standard soft round brush was the fine vein detail in the leaves... for which I used a stock photo found here: [link] to make a brush.

This is a really amazing piece! The detail is very well done and I can see that you really took your time with this piece.

*The whiskers are really well done, they look natural and flow very nicely with the ocelot's face.
*Inside the mouth can be tricky yet it seems like you had no trouble getting all that little detail, even the teeth that are hiding way in the back there, nice job! The tongue is cute by the way. <img src="e.deviantart.net/emoticons/g/g…" width="17" height="15" alt=":giggle:" title="Giggle" />
*The background is very nice, dark backgrounds can be hard, you did a nice job.
*The anatomy of the cat is perfect, I don't see any distortion.

*To me the fur seems a little too smooth, maybe he looked that smooth in the picture but to me it almost looks unnaturally smooth.
*As gorgeous as the eye is I think it needs some more depth. Maybe adding some darker lines to make the eye look more realistic.

Other than those two things I think it's perfect! <img class="avatar" src="a.deviantart.net/avatars/g/d/g…" alt=":icongdjobplz:" title="gdjobplz"/>
